Ngorongoro Conservation Area
A volcanic caldera packed with wildlife and Maasai history.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area protects a highland landscape about 180 km west of Arusha, centred on a vast volcanic caldera. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Tanzania's most extraordinary places to see wildlife.
Unlike a conventional national park, the area is shared with Maasai communities, who live and graze livestock alongside the wildlife. Its western edge meets the Serengeti, and the wider landscape is part of the Great Migration route. Olduvai Gorge, within the conservation area, is one of the world's most important early-human sites.

The crater delivers good wildlife sightings in every month. Dry-season months from June to October are the easiest for spotting animals because the grass is low; the wet months turn the highlands green and dramatic.
